DI fined Rs 5,000 by Calcutta HC for delaying transfer of teacher

MP | 5 Feb 2022 | Kolkata: Calcutta High Court has imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on the School Inspector (DI) of North 24-Parganas in connection with delay in the transfer of a teacher.
Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay, during the hearing, directed that the money should be deposited in the funds of the State Legal Services Authority within the next 15 days and the transfer of the teacher should happen within the next seven days.
Gopal Mahato, a resident of Nazat, got a job as a Bengali teacher at Katwa High School a decade ago. He later applied for a transfer at Tangrakhali High School in Canning as there were vacancies in 2019.
But due to the delay of the school inspector, it remained pending.
After this, the teacher approached the Calcutta High Court.
In July last year, state Education minister Bratya Basu inaugurated 'Utsashree' portal for the transfer of teachers working in government-sponsored and aided primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools.
The portal was launched to cater to the grievances of 4.5 lakh teachers in the state. The applicant has to be confirmed in service and can apply for transfer only after completing five years of satisfactory service in a particular school and a particular post.
There will be no transfer within 25 km of the present posting. Moreover, the age of the applicant seeking transfer should be below 59 years. Transfer can be sought due to sickness of self or family members, long-distance, physical disability or certain other specified grounds.
Meanwhile, a Public Interest Litigation has been filed in Calcutta High Court on Friday seeking online as well as physical classes for students of classes VIII to XII.
The matter is expected to be heard on Monday.
