Bengal logs 236 new Covid-19 cases and nine deaths

TT Special Correspondent   |   Calcutta   |   23.02.22:   Bengal on Tuesday reported 236 Covid-19 infections, including 31 from Calcutta.

This is for 16 days in a row that the state logged a three-digit figure of fresh cases since the infections spiked in the third wave.

Bengal also logged 1,233 recoveries and nine deaths, resulting in a drop in the total of active cases by 1,006 to 3,437. Calcutta reported four deaths.

This was the 37th consecutive day of such a drop in active cases in the third wave, resulting in improvement by 98 per cent in the total since January 17. There were 1.6 lakh active cases on January 16.

Positive confirmation rate or percentage of samples testing positive is 0.84 per cent now, below 1 per cent for five days in a row, in a first this pandemic.

The state’s Covid-19 recovery rate improved for 37 consecutive days to reach 98.78 per cent. The national rate is 98.38 now.

Between December 29 and January 16, it dropped by 8 percentage points, before recovering by over 8 percentage points over these 37 days. In these 37 days, the state reported nearly 2.72 lakh recoveries, which outweighed the 1.16 lakh new cases found.Eighteen districts reported zero deaths. The state’s mortality rate is 1.05 per cent.

Bengal has some 20.14 lakh cases since the first was detected in the state in March 2020. The total includes over 19.89 lakh recoveries and 21,152 deaths.
