TT Correspondent   |   Alipurduar   |    01.02.22  : Acting on a tip-off, a team of Samuktala police station in Alipurduar district rescued three women and a minor girl while they were on way to a railway station on Sunday night to apparently board a Delhi-bound train on Monday.

The police have also arrested a woman, identified as Lali, suspected to be a trafficker.

According to police sources, on Saturday evening, they got information that Lali, who is from a tea estate of Alipurduar, was taking a minor girl, an adult girl and two homemakers to Delhi. All are residents of the same tea estate.

“We got information that they left the tea garden on Sunday night to board the Delhi-bound Mahananda Express from Alipurduar on Monday morning. We intercepted them before they could board the train,” said a police officer.

Police have come to know that Lali promised them jobs as domestic helps in Delhi and had taken Rs 8,000 from each.

On Monday, Lali was produced at the additional chief judicial magistrate’s court here. The court sent her to police custody for seven days. The four victims were handed over to their families.

Body found

Police recovered the body of a newly married woman aged 23 from Khayerbari forest of Alipurduar on Sunday.

Around 1.30pm on Sunday, the woman, her husband and some others, were in the forest to collect wood. A team of foresters challenged them as collecting timber is illegal, prompting them to flee. But the woman became traceless. Later, she was found dead, her throat slit. Her husband has been detained for questioning.
