Bengal registers steep drop in positivity rate over 12 days

TT Special Correspondent   |   Calcutta   |   23.01.22  : Bengal on Saturday reported 9,191 new Covid-19 infections, including 1,489 from Calcutta.

In the 24 hours till 9am on Saturday, the state logged 20,313 recoveries and 37 deaths, resulting in a drop in the total number of active cases to 1,23,657. Calcutta registered seven deaths.

The positive confirmation rate — the percentage of samples testing positive for the coronavirus — has come down to 11.13 per cent from an all-time high of 37.32 per cent 12 days ago on January 10.

The positivity rate had been 12.58 per cent on Friday. On Saturday, 82,564 tests were conducted, which was over 10,000 more than the previous day.

The recovery rate has improved to 92.65 per cent from 92.04 per cent on Friday. Till Sunday, it had dropped by nearly eight percentage points after December 28. The national rate is 93.31 now.

On December 28, the statewide daily total of Covid cases 752, including 382 from Calcutta, and the total active caseload was 7,457.

In the 24 days since, the state has logged over 3.26 lakh new infections, including more than 1.04 lakh from Calcutta. Eleven of the state’s 23 districts reported zero deaths. The state’s mortality rate is 1.04 per cent.

Bengal has had more than 19.58 lakh cases now since the first was detected in the state in March 2020. The total includes over 18.14 lakh recoveries and 20,302 deaths.
