TT Bureau   |   New Delhi   |  17.12.21 : A gathering on Jantar Mantar Road, New Delhi, commemorates the second anniversary of the women-led protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act that began at Shaheen Bagh in the capital. Similar commemorations were held in many places, including Patna, Mumbra, Dhule, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Patiala and Jaipur.

Women had taken over an arterial road in Delhi for 100 days after police and the CRPF went on the rampage at Jamia Millia Islamia university on December 15, 2019, in response to arson during a student march against the CAA. The Shaheen Bagh protest inspired similar women-led sit-ins across India that promoted constitutional values and opposed the CAA. Police removed the Shaheen Bagh protesters after the lockdown began in March last year.

Shabnam Hashmi, whose group Act Now for Harmony And Democracy organised the Delhi commemoration along with Left groups, told The Telegraph: “Today’s programmes in over 20 places are a warning to the government that they either repeal the CAA and stall the NRC process or the movement will restart.”
