Agencies and FE | November 2, 2021: India reported 10,423 new Coronavirus cases, the lowest in 259 days, in the last 24 hours, taking its overall Covid-19 tally to 3,42,96,237, while the active cases declined to 1,53,776, the lowest in 250 days, according to data from the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday.
With 443 fresh fatalities, the Covid-19 death toll surged to 4,58,880, according to the data updated at 8 am. The active cases now account for 0.45% of the total infections, the lowest since March 2020, while the national Covid-19 recovery rate improved to 98.21%, the highest since March 2020, the ministry said.
Active cases decline to 1,53,776, lowest in 250 days; India has been reporting below 20,000 new Covid-19 cases for the past 25 days.
It has been nearly two years since the Covid-19 pandemic hit the world. The fight against Coronavirus is not over yet. Even as people around the world prepare for normalcy, there are reports that suggest the virus is resurging in several regions. Countries such as the US, UK, Russia, China, Singapore, Ukraine, and other countries in Eastern Europe have witnessed a sharp spike in fresh coronavirus infections in the past few days.
The UK witnessed a 14% rise in new cases at 283,756 cases (the highest), followed by Russia’s 217,322, according to data from the World Health Organization. The UK reported more than 50,000 cases for the first time since July 17; the Delta variant is the reason behind the surge, according to experts. However, infections due to AY.4.2 Delta sub-lineage are spreading rapidly, according to the latest reports. In less than two years, the total number of deaths due to Coronavirus complications crossed 5 million yesterday globally. The US alone has posted over 740,000 fatalities, more than any other nation. Together, the US, the EU, Britain, and Brazil – all upper-middle- or high-income countries – account for one-eighth of the world’s population but nearly half of all reported Covid deaths.
In India, though the Coronavirus situation is under control, there have been reports of a spike in new cases in some parts of the country after the Durga Puja festivals. West Bengal, Assam, and Himachal Pradesh witnessed up to 40% surge in fresh Coronavirus infection in the week after festivals. The emergence of the new Delta ‘sub variant’, AY.4.2 variant in Madhya Pradesh also raises the fear of a third wave.
Meanwhile, India has been reporting below 20,000 new Covid-19 cases for the past 25 days. Even though the uneven pace of vaccination remains a worry, the country has so far administered more than 106.85 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses. According to data from Union Health Ministry, nearly 35% eligible population is fully vaccinated.
