Bailey bridge over Balason river to open on December 1

PRASHANT ACHARYA,  EOI, SILIGURI, NOVEMBER 23 Nov : Balason Bridge at Matigara in Siliguri will reopen from December 1 for movement of vehicles weighing up to 10 tonnes. Engineer Ajay Gupta executing the project said the construction of the Bailey bridge would be completed by December 1.
PWD officials also confirmed the date for opening of the Bailey bridge, allowing vehicular movement. The bridge on Balason river that was set up in the 1960s was damaged due to the torrential rain on October 20.
The sixth pillar of the bridge had sunk. Senior officers including t4he secretary and chief engineer of PWD's National Highway division are monitoring the progress daily and are in regular touch with local administration.
The 180m long bridge connects Siliguri with Bagdogra, Nepal border and other places.
At present the traffic has been diverted through the Third Mahananda Bridge via Naukaghat, North Bengal Medical College and Hospital to Siliguri.
Daily passengers and other travellers have to take the trouble of travelling a longer distance and face a traffic snarl.
