The weather in Kolkata is likely to improve from Wednesday, the Met office has said.
Tuesday was gloomy, too, and rainy throughout the day. But the volume of rain was less compared with Monday.
The Met office recorded around 30mm of rain in Alipore from 8.30pm on Monday to 8.30pm on Tuesday, the bulk of which fell during the night.
“The rain is likely to further abate from Wednesday,” said a Met office.
The latest rainy spell was tipped to bring heavy to very heavy rain (60-200mm in 24 hours) in coastal districts of south Bengal.
Some places in South 24-Parganas did receive more than 100mm of rain on Monday. But Kolkata and adjoining areas were spared.
The sky was gloomy for most of Tuesday, barring a brief spell in the afternoon when the sun came out.
But two days of cloud cover and rain kept the mercury on the lower side, for the second day on the trot.
Tuesday’s maximum temperature was 26.9 degrees, five notches below normal.
Though the weather in south Bengal is poised to get better from Wednesday, north Bengal is likely to get heavy rain on Wednesday as well.
Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Alipurduar have been battered by torrential rain since Monday. Darjeeling got around 170mm of rain between Monday morning and Tuesday morning.
“It has been raining incessantly since around 2am on Tuesday. I have not been able to step out the whole day,” said a resident of Kasba who reached Darjeeling on Monday evening.
