Calcutta High Court fines CM for Narada affidavit delay

The affidavits had been filed in response to the CBI’s plea before the special bench

Meghdeep Bhattacharyya | TT | Calcutta | 01.07.21 : Calcutta High Court on Wednesday imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 each on the state government, chief minister Mamata Banerjee and law minister Malay Ghatak for their delay in filing affidavits in the Narada arrest case.

The fines were imposed by a five-member special bench headed by acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal.

The affidavits had been filed in response to the CBI’s plea before the special bench. The CBI had made the state government, Mamata and Ghatak respondents in the Narada case, alleging that they had interfered with the probe following the arrest of four politicians, including two Bengal ministers, on May 17.

As the three parties had filed the affidavits late, the high court refused to accept them.

The affidavits were filed afresh this week and the high court accepted them following a Supreme Court verdict.

Post-poll violence

A committee set up by the chairman of the National Human Right Commission on Wednesday filed a status report on post-violence before the high court. The court fixed the matter for hearing on Friday.
