West Bengal HS, Madhyamik exams cancelled: CM Mamata Banerjee

The government had previously formed an expert committee to evaluate the current Covid-19 situation and make a decision about the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations in the state.

Education Desk | New Delhi | June 7, 2021:  The West Bengal government today announced the cancellation of the Class 10 Madhyamik and Class 12 Higher Secondary/Uchhamadhyamik examinations, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The government had previously formed an expert committee to evaluate the current Covid-19 situation and make a decision about the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations in the state.

“Our children’s future is my greatest priority. In this regard, we have formed an expert committee to decide over holding the Class 10th & 12th board exams in 2021. We are also inviting views & opinion from parents, the general public, sector experts, civil society & students. I request each one of you to send us your feedback on the issue by e-mailing us on the following addresses by June 7th, 2021, 2 PM…Your suggestions will be valuable to us,” Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said in a series of tweets

Taking into account the suggestions of the stakeholders and other individuals, the panel eventually cancelled the Madhyamik and HS examinations.

Previously, CM Mamata Banerjee had announced that Class 12 board examinations would be held towards the end of July, while Class 10 examinations would be held in mid-August. This decision to cancel examinations comes after the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) announced the cancellation of the CBSE Class 12 examinations, which was soon followed by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) announced the cancellation of ISC Class 12 examinations. Subsequently, several state governments such as Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and others announced that Class 12 board examinations would be cancelled in their respective states.
