Plan to build electric crematorium in Kurseong picks up pace

SNS, DARJEELING, 31 MAY 21 : Plans are afoot to build an electric crematorium at Kurseong, according to the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (Binoy Tamang camp), with a "site visit" also done to see its feasibility there yesterday.

The Morcha camp's general secretary, Anit Thapa yesterday said in a press release, "Many people are dying due to Covid-19 and there is a problem arising in terms of their cremation. If an electric crematorium comes up, it will prove to be much helpful to family members of those who pass away after contracting the virus. I had taken up this demand with the government, along with the administration here."

Mr Thapa had recently written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, demanding such an electric crematorium for Darjeeling and Kurseong in view of the Covid deaths.

Mr Thapa also expressed happiness on a team comprising administration officials and engineers doing a site visit for the project.

An electric crematorium has already come up in Kalimpong, but is yet to start operations, with the person who will operate it yet to join duty due to health conditions, maintained sources.
