Kurseong civic board chief removed: Brigen Gurung likely to take over as the civic body head.
SNS, DARJEELING, 4 JUNE 21 : A majority of the ward councillors at the Kurseong Municipality today moved a no-confidence motion against Chairman Krishna Limbu and removed him from his post.
The civic body there has 20 wards with a majority of them under representatives of the Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha (Binoy Tamang faction), while only three wards have Trinamul Congress councillors.
"Limbu is no longer the chairman of the Kurseong Municipality, which will now function properly. When a leader does not work for the people and only for one person, the result is never good. It is the right of the people to expect good work, which will be done by a new Board," Morcha (Tamang camp) general secretary Anit Thapa said.
The decision to remove the chairman had been taken after an incident on 4 May when a family of a Covid patient who passed away levelled allegations that the way the body was taken and cremated was not done properly by the civic body.
Kurseong ward councillor Subash Pradhan said in a press release, "The councillors who had been working hard faced people's backlash due to the incident. When we approached Limbu, instead of trying to improving the services, he took political steps."
"We had written to him, asking him to call a vote of confidence within the stipulated time of 15 days as per the Business Rule of the West Bengal Municipality. We hear that he had suggested another date, but none of us received a letter in effect to that," said Mr Pradhan, adding that the meeting today was called by the vicechairman Brigen Gurung, while Mr Limbu did not attend the meeting today.
Sources said that Mr Gurung is likely to take over as the civic body head.
