Very strong mag. 6.1 earthquake - Northeastern India on Wednesday, 28 April 2021 at 02:21 (GMT) - information
Don't Miss
volcanodiscovery, 28 April 21: India was shaken near Dhekiajuli, Sonitpur, Assam, by an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 only 12 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Dhekiajuli, Sonitpur, Assam, India, in the morning on Wednesday 28 April 2021 at 7:21 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.9. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 6.2.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure.
Towns or cities where the quake likely caused strong ground shaking include
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Rangapara (pop. 18,700) located 23 km from the epicenter, Udalguri (pop. 15,900) 34 km away, Dhing (pop. 20,800) 38 km away, Tezpur (pop. 58,900) 41 km away, and Khārupatia (pop. 18,600) 44 km away.
In Guwahati (pop. 899,100) located 98 km from the epicenter, and Dispur (pop. 10,800) 98 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
