TNN,19 March 21 , Kolkata: A public interest litigation has been filed in Calcutta High Court challenging the state government’s move to withdraw cases against GJM leader Bimal Gurung and demanding his arrest along with his associates.
Gurung was a fugitive before he surfaced in Kolkata last October and pledged support to chief minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress.
Citing orders issued earlier in similar cases, including withdrawal of criminal case against Anisur Rehman of Nandigram following his support to TMC, petitioner Ankur Sharma pointed out that grievous cases, including those under UAPA, were withdrawn against Gurung. Gurung had spearheaded the agitation in the Hills since September 2017 and the ensuing violence led to 13 deaths.
“Despite several arrest warrants issued against Bimal Gurung, police escorted and provided protection to him instead of arresting him immediately,” the petitioner said
