Two Manipur men held with gold bars

Gold around five kg and worth more than Rs 2.5 crore

SNS, SILIGURI, 31 OCTOBER 2020 :The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized gold weighing around five kg and worth more than Rs 2.5 crore and arrested two Manipuri youths from the Ghoshpukur bypass near Siliguri today.

Acting on intelligence inputs, DRI sleuths apprehended the two residents of Thoubal district in Manipur - Buyamayum Jahangir, 30, and Shahidur Hellman, 31. Sources said the duo planned to deliver the yellow metal to someone in Uttar Pradesh.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the gold bars weighing 4.980 kg were smuggled into India from Maynamar through Moreh in Manipur. The estimated value of the gold bars is Rs 2,60,10,540.

"During the search of their vehicle, we first removed the bottom plastic cover over the left hand rear door panel and fished out three elongated rectangular objects wrapped in broxim self-adhesive tapes and then removed the bottom plastic cover of the right hand front door and took out two similar objects. On unwrapping the tapes, each object was found to be actually six pieces of gold bars of foreign origin.Thirty such bars have been recovered," a DRI source said.

Rejecting their bail plea, the Siliguri Court ordered them in 14 days' judicial custody today, it is learnt.
