India’s Covid-19 fatality rate drops to 1.47 but R value increases to 0.95

New Delhi: India’s R value — a key parameter to measure the rate of an infection’s spread — saw an increase to 0.95 this week from 0.88 last week. As long as the value stays below 1, active cases will continue to decline.

As of Friday, active cases declined to 4,84,547, while India’s overall case fatality rate also dropped to 1.47.

After declining for several weeks, the R value, which denotes how fast the infection is spreading, increased to 0.95. For the last two weeks, the R was steady at 0.88.

The number of new Covid-19 cases reported in the last 24 hours reduced to 44,879 Friday.  The number of daily cases have been fluctuating between 36,000 and 50,000 since 25 October.

The total active case count in India has reduced further to 4,84,547. This accounts for 5.55 per cent of the total cases of coronavirus detected in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

As many as 547 people have died due to Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, which has brought the death toll in the country to 1,28,668. This accounts for nearly 10 per cent of the global Covid-19 fatalities.

Punjab continues to maintain the highest case fatality rate in the country at 3.15. Maharashtra and Gujarat also have high CFRs of 2.63 and 2.04, respectively. Kerala, the state with the second highest burden of active cases, maintains a low CFR of 0.34.

India’s overall case fatality rate has reduced further to 1.48.

In the last 24 hours, 11,39,230 Covid-19 tests have been carried out across 1,144 government laboratories and 944 private laboratories in the country. India has carried out 12,31,01,739 total tests in the country since the beginning of the pandemic.

Positivity rate

The test positivity rate reduced to 3.9 per cent over the last 24 hours from 4.0 yesterday.  The overall TPR for India, which is calculated since the beginning of the pandemic, has reduced further to 7.0 per cent.

Recovered cases

In the last 24 hours, 44,879 people have recovered from Covid-19. As many as 81,15,580 people have recovered from the infection in India so far — which is the highest number of Covid-19 recoveries in the world.

As many as 87,28,795 people have tested positive for Covid-19 since the beginning of the pandemic, making India the country with the second-highest disease burden in the world after the US.

In the last 24 hours, Maharashtra has reported 4,496 new Covid-19 cases and 122 deaths.

The state has registered the highest number of coronavirus cases in the country so far — 17,36,329. Of these, 85,583 are active cases, while 45,682 people have died from the disease so far.

In Karnataka, a total of 8,55,912 people have been infected with Covid-19. Of these, 29,489 are active cases.

In the last 24 hours, 2,116 new Covid-19 cases were detected in the state.

The death toll of the state currently stands at 11,474, with 21 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours.

Tamil Nadu has 18,395 active Covid-19 cases as of Thursday, while the state’s death toll has risen to 11,440.

Over the last 24 hours, 2,112 people have tested positive for the disease, while 28 people have died.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, 7,52,521 people have tested positive for the virus in the state.

In Andhra Pradesh, 1,728 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of cases detected in the state to 8,49,705. Of these, 20,857 are active cases.

The state’s death toll stands at 6,837, with nine deaths reported in the last 24 hours.

In Uttar Pradesh, 5,05,426 people so far have been infected with Covid. Of these, 7,302 people have died, while 22,949 cases are still active.

In the last 24 hours, 2,267 people have tested Covid-19 positive while 21 people have died.
