Five die in Siliguri; 156 new Covid cases in Darj district

A total of 156 new cases were recorded in the district today, while the figures were a whopping 171 yesterday, sources said

SNS, SILIGURI. 5 NOVEMBER 2020 : An 82-year-old resident of Rabindranagar in Siliguri died at the designated hospital for Covid- 19 patients at Kawakhali in Siliguri today.  He had been admitted there on 21 November, sources said.

Another 69-year-old resident of Santoshinagar in Siliguri died at another Covid hospital at Matigara last night, while a 58-year-old person from Jaldhaka in Kalimpong district died at the hospital at Kawakahli today, a day after his admission. A 54-year- old resident of Kalimpong who had been admitted to the hospital on 31 October also died. A 45-year-old resident of Kokrajhar in Assam also died in a private hospital here, sources said.

Meanwhile, in what is being seen as a spike that may have been caused by the recent Durga Puja festivities, Darjeeling district, especially the plain areas, has recorded more number of Covid cases as compared to figures before the puja.

A total of 156 new cases were recorded in the district today, while the figures were a whopping 171 yesterday, sources said.

Among the fresh cases today 89 were found in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation alone, six in Darjeeling Municipality, two in Kharibari, five in Sukna, four in Kurseong Municipality, 22 in Matigara, two in Mirik, 15 in Naxalbari, six in Phansidewa, two in Sukhia Pokhari, and three in Takdah.

A total of 17 cases were also found separately in the Jalpaiguri portion of the SMC.

Also today sources said that 84 Covid patients were either discharged front hospitals or they ended their home isolation period.

50 cases in Malda

Another 50 samples were tested positive for the novel coronavirus in Malda in tests conducted last night, sources said. The day, however, saw a dip as compared to the figures for yesterday that stood at 147 infections. Sources said officials and the common people alike heaved a sigh of relief at the dip today.

Among the fresh cases were 14 in Old Malda and 12 in the English Bazaar Municipality.

30 in South Dinajpur

South Dinajpur also recorded 30 new cases in the past 24 hours, while 47 patients were discharged from the hospital and home isolation, sources said. The total number of active patients is 211 in the district, with 155 of them in home isolation. Among the fresh cases were 13 from areas under the Balurghat Municipality.
