Five Covid patients die in Siliguri hosps - Siliguri top cop among several more infected

SNS, SILIGURI,  9 AUGUST 2020 : F ive persons, including four Siliguri residents, have died in the past 24 hours. A 72-year-old resident of Matigara died at the Desun Hospital at Kawakhali late last night. He was admitted there on 5 August. An 80- year-old woman of Pradhannagar also died at the same hospital today. She was also admitted in the hospital on 8 August.

Three more persons died in one private nursing home at Pradhannagar. A 62-year old person of Ward 42 of Siliguri died there last evening, while a 73-year-old resident of Islampur in North Dinajpur district died last evening.

An 80-year- old resident of Amaidighi in Jalpaiguri district also died in the nursing home today. Meanwhile, Siliguri police Chief  Tripurari Atharv has been tested positive for Covid- 19. He is undergoing treatment in home isolation.

It is learnt that 50-year-old. Mr Atharv, had not travelled any where recently and that he has fever. Earlier, a senior IPS officer was tested positive for Covid- 19 in Siliguri.

On the other hand, 33 cases have been reported in Darjeeling district, and 28 in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation (SMC) area (14 cases each in Darjeeling and Jalpaiguri districts).

According to health department sources, one case has been found in the Naxalbari block, while 10 cases were found in Matigara. Eight cases have also been detected in areas under the Kurseong Municipality.

Officials said 480 persons had been under the home isolation in the district, of whom, the number of active cases is 209 till today. "A total of 271 patients have completed their isolation period and 18 new patients have been taken under home isolation today" an oficial said.

Meanwhile, tourism minister Gautam Deb inspected a 'safe home' being readied at the Indoor Stadium in Siliguri today.

'A 70-bed safe home will be created in the stadium. In an isolated area, there will be eight beds with eight oxygen cylinders. There will be two rooms for doctors and nurses. There will be free Wi-Fi facility, and television sets for the entertainment of the patients. Patients will be able to contact the doctors through intercoms," Mr Deb said.

There will be six housekeeping staff working 24 hours in the stadium safe house.

Malda sees dip in cases

It was a welcome respite in Malda today as the district detected only 35 new cases of Covid- 19 in tests conducted in the Malda Medical College and Hospital and through rapid antigen tests last night. The district had reported a sharp rise in the number the other day.

Twenty three cases were found in the VRDL in the MMCH, while 12 were detected through the antigen tests, sources said.

Ratua-II continued to report a spike with 17 of the 23 fresh cases, while the English Bazaar Municipality (EBM) had four and Chanchal-I two. Among the rapid antigen tests, four are from Habibpur and three from Gazole.

84 in South Dinajpur

In South Dinajpur district, 84 new cases of coronavirus have been detected, according to health department sources.

A total of 51 positive reports came from the MMCH last night, while 13 more were found through antigen andTrueNat machine tests conducted in the Balurghat hospital, sources said.

Six of the new cases are frorn Balurghat town, 18 in Balurghat's rural areas, two in Tapan, five in Gangarampur town, 12 in Gangarampur block, four in Bangshihari, three in Buniadpur and one in Kumarganj block.

The total number of infected people in the district has gone up to 1765, while 1139 have already recovered so far, officials said.
