Two Siliguri colleges slash fees for parents’ relief -More institutions likely to follow suit

Siliguri collegeBinita Paul   |   TT   |   Siliguri   |   28.07.20  :   Two colleges here have decided to slash fees for old students as well as for new entrants as an attempt to reduce the burden on parents in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The two institutions that have decided on concessions are Siliguri College and Surya Sen College.

“Each semester (the three-year UG course has six semesters) the cost is around Rs 6,000. We plan to waive Rs 1,000 for each semester. Admission fee was Rs 200 but this year it will be half,” said Jayanta Kar, president of the governing body of Siliguri College.

“We will reduce fees in some subjects where charges are higher. We will give 45 per cent concession on computer science course and reduce Rs 1,000 from the fees of microbiology, journalism and BBA,” Kar added. This year, the college plans to introduce uniforms for students for free, Kar added.

Surya Sen College principal P.K. Mishra said they would reduce fees by 30 per cent for new entrants. “For new students, we plan to cut fees by around 30 per cent. They will have to pay Rs 150 as admission fee against the normal Rs 250.”

Siliguri Women’s College, Munshi Premchand College, Bagdogra College and Naxalbari College are mulling similar measures and are likely to decide before August 10, when the admission process starts.
