Man dies; wife tries suicide with kids

SNS, SILIGURI, 7 JULY 2020: In a shocking incident, a woman tried to commit suicide with her two children, hours after her husband died at the Siliguri District Hospital.  The mans throat swab later tested positive for Covid-19. The trio from Nivedita Road in Ward 45 is now battling for life in hospital.

A primary school teacher by profession, the 36-year old person was admitted in the hospital with fever on 2 July and he died late yesterday night. He had joined the school three-and-a-half years ago. It is learnt that he had lung infection. "The wife went out with her two children, who are five and two years old. She reached the NJP railway station and apparently jumped in front of a running train from the road-over-bridge. They were seriously injured after being hit by the Down Agartala- Delhi Express at 1.50 pm," sources said.

The Government Railway Police said the three had sustained serious injuries on the track at platform number three. Shocked by the incident, some of the man's colleagues suspected that his wife may have taken the drastic step to avoid social stigma.

Also today, a woman from Ward 30 in Siliguri died at her residence, while her Covid test reports confirmed she was infected with the coronavirus. On the other hand, 32 new cases were reported in the Siliguri Municipal Corporation area in the past 24 hours.

Trinamul Congress leader tests positive

Leader of the Opposition at the Siliguri Mahakuma Parishad (SMP) and Trinamul Congress leader Kajal Ghosh was also tested posifive for the virus today. He has been admitted in a private hospital in Matigara.The office of the SMP has been sealed for two days. Another party leader and INTTUC NJP unit president Prasenjit Roy was also tested positive. Many party leaders, administrative officials, and police officers had come in contact with the duo.

48, including officials, test positive in Malda

Meanwhile, 48 new cases of the novel coronavirus were found in English Bazaar and other areas or the district. The fresh cases include the SDO, Sadar, policemen, the bodyguard of the Malda Superintendent of Police, doctors, nurses and health workers, sources said. Meanwhile, a youth of Jalalpur under the Kaliachak police station became the fifth person to die after contracting the virus in Malda. He died at the Covid Hospital, sources said. However, there was no official confirmation of the same. English Bazaar, Old Malda and Kaliachak will, meanwhile, go for fresh lock-down, while only essential and emergency services will remain open, officials said.

10 more in S Dinajpur

In South Dinajpur, 10 new Covid cases have been detected in the past 24 hours. The fresh cases included two journalists in Buniadpur and four persons in Balurghat.

Nine in North Dinajpur

North Dinajpur saw nine more cases in the past 24 hours. Two of the affected are residents of Dalkhola Municipality, two from Islampur Municipality, one in Raiganj Municipality, two from the rural belt of Raiganj and two front the Islampur block, sources said.

2 cases in Alipurduar

In Alipurduar, two persons from Birpara were tested positive for Covid-19 positive today. One of the two persons had visited the Alipurduar district administrative building Dooars kanya yesterday, it is learnt.
