Wednesday wind won’t let city bury Amphan.. Several trees fell again and some areas on the northern fringes plunged into darkness

Debraj Mitra and Subhankar Chowdhury, TT, 28.05.20, Calcutta: Winds clocking nearly 100kmph, along with a sharp spell of rain and streaks of lightning, buffeted Calcutta on Wednesday evening — exactly a week after Cyclone Amphan struck.

Several trees fell again and some areas on the northern fringes plunged into darkness in an unsettling throwback to a calamity whose impact the city has yet to live down. “Is Wednesday the new doomsday?” asked a WhatsApp forward.

A portion of a house in Telengabagan near Ultadanga caved in around 6.20pm but there was no casualty, police said.

Unlike Amphan that raged for several hours, the latest storm was short-lived — starting around 6.15pm and lasting till 6.35pm.

The storm was caused by a trough of low pressure extending over Bihar to north Bengal, said a Met official. The next few days are likely to see some more spells of rain and occasional gusts of wind, said the Met office.

Alipore clocked a maximum wind speed of 96kmph around 6.23pm, the Met office said.

Trees were uprooted on Raja SC Mullick Road in front of Jadavpur University, Sovabazar, Deshapriya Park and Salt Lake.

Most of the uprooted trees had already been rendered unstable by Amphan.

Power outage was reported in Teghoria off VIP Road, Kestopur, Raghunathpur, Baguiati, parts of Chinar Park and Rajarhat.

An official of the state-run West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (WBSEDCL) said temporary repairs that had been carried out in these places had taken a hit during the storm.
