Spot traffic fine launched in Siliguri

Earlier, the policemen used to fill up a "challan" (an official form) while imposing fine on any violator and the concerned person would have to deposit the money in a bank and then visit the traffic department's office to collect his seized documents.
"From now on, if anyone violates traffic rules, we can collect the fine from the of- fender on the spot. The person can make payment with his credit or debit card through a smart mobile tablet given to the traffic cops," said D.S. Sonar, the additional deputy commissioner of police (traffic) of Siliguri.
According to sources, if the traffic offender is not carrying a debit or credit card, the person can pay through online payment applications.
"A link from the device will be sent to the mobile number and by clicking on the link, anyone can pay the amount," said a source.
As of now, the traffic police have been handed over 23 such devices. "We have 23 devices for trial now. Once the process rolls, we will try to get more," said Sonar.
The devices have been handed over to inspectors and sub-inspectors of the department.
The new device, a police officer pointed, would ease the process both for policemen and common people.
"So far, the police had to maintain papers for records but from now on, it will be a complete digital process and no paper is needed for any kind of work or to keep records," the officer said.
The machine that is connected to records would also show details of the vehicle if the number is entered. It would mention whether the vehicle owner has any previous dues..
