Piyush Srivastava , TT, 30.12.19, Lucknow: An FIR has been registered against six policemen in Bijnore on the charge of killing Mohammad Sulaiman, 20, on the basis of a complaint from the victim’s brother.
Police sources said the ballistic report had confirmed that the bullet that hit Sulaiman in the chest on December 20 had been fired from a police rifle.
Nahtaur OC Rajesh Solanki and sub-inspector Ashish Tomar have been booked along with four constables, including the alleged shooter Mohit Kumar. All six had been deployed at the site of a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
Sulaiman’s younger brother Shuaib Hussain Mallik had lodged an online police complaint identifying all the six accused policemen.
“My brother was returning after Friday prayers at a mosque when Solanki, Tomar and the other policemen caught him near Agency Chauraha and dragged him towards a madarsa in Ghasmandi,” Shuaib told reporters at the family home.
“Constable Mohit Kumar then shot my brother in the chest. Some people took him to a community health centre after the police left. He was declared dead on arrival.”
Shuaib said several eyewitnesses had promised to testify in court. He said that Sulaiman was a third-year BA student and was preparing for the civil services exam.
Bijnore superintendent of police (urban) Sanjeev Tyagi has removed Solanki from Nahtaur police station and put him on compulsory waiting.
“We have registered a case of murder against six policemen on the basis of the complaint from Sulaiman’s brother,” Tyagi said.
Mohammad Anas, 21, too died of gunshot injuries during the same protest but, police sources said, the ballistic report has found that the bullet did not come from a police rifle.
