General strike on Jan 8: Left-Cong

TNN 28 December 2019, Kolkata: Kolkata: Left parties and Congress have called for a general strike on January 8 to protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, National Register of Citizens and other “anti-people policies” affecting workers and peasants.

Burying their differences to protest against CAA and NRC, Left and Congress marched from Subodh Mullick Square to Mahajati Sadan here on Friday, terming CAA a “black law” and criticizing what they claimed was the Centre’s bid to drive a wedge among communities, particularly in Bengal.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose and state Congress leaders Somen Mitra and Pradip Bhattacharya were among those who participated in the rally called by 17 parties. The rallyists chanted slogans against BJP but took care to distinguish themselves from Trinamool.

“We have been opposing CAA, National Population Register and NRC from the beginning. The Trinamool government had deputed officials to undertake training on NPR along with central government officials. The CM stayed the process only after the government circular on NPR was made public,” said CPM state secretariat member Sujan Chakrabarty.
