Kalimpong missionary passes away

VIVEK CHHETRI, TT, 11 Sep 2019, Darjeeling: Fr Edouard Gressot CR, the last surviving Canons Regular Missionary from Switzerland to work in Kalimpong, breathed his last at St Maurice Abbey, Switzerland, on Monday. He was 97.
Fr Gressot was one of the chief architects behind St. Augustine's School's (SAS) rise to be one of the best in the hills.

"Fr. Edouard Gressot CR was born on January 17, 1922 and was ordained as a priest on March 17, 1945," said a teacher from St. Augustine's, Kalimpong.

The young priest arrived in Kalimpong on December 12, 1947, and was associated with SAS. The school was established in 1945 from a provisional building of a new Presbytery in 8th Mile in Kalimpong. Fr Gressot was associated with SAS from 1948 to 1978.

"He started as a teacher of English and Life Science. Later, he worked in various other capacities -- as bursar, hostel prefect and ultimately as the principal of the school," said the teacher.

The priest got his brother to prepare the master plan of the school, hostel and other facilities that the SAS enjoys.
