Suspected Chinese national held with Indian IDs in Darjeeling

TNN, 21 July 2019, SILIGURI: A suspected Chinese national was arrested at Panitanki on Sunday morning while he was spotted heading towards Nepal with Indian documents.
After intercepting him, Sashastra Seema Bal officials found him carrying $11,000, 1,554 Chinese yen, Rs 44,570 and 60 Hong Kong currency notes.
A Chinese travel document was also found on him.
An Indian voter card and Aadhaar card found in his possession mentioned his name as Thunathen Funechak Lama, a resident of Mirik in Darjeeling. Suspecting that these had been forged, SSB officials questioned him about how he acquired the documents.
An SSB official later said the man was identified as Wangdu, a resident of China’s Sichuan province. During interrogation, he denied knowing Chinese. But when officials checked his phone, they spotted chats he had made in Chinese.
The presence of a Chinese national masquerading as an Indian citizen in the sensitive Panitanki area has turned out to be a major security wake-up call for the forces posted there as officials suspect he may have been involved in espionage.
