DRI nets cigarettes worth Rs 1cr
"The DRI came to know that the consignment of foreign cigarettes was coming from north-eastern states. It was supposed to be smuggled to Calcutta through Siliguri. Accordingly, a team waited near Goaltuli More in Phansidewa on Sunday night and intercepted a truck. During the search, 24 cartons of foreign-made cigarettes were found in the vehicle, said Tridip Saha, the lawyer representing the DRI on Monday. The total cost of the seized cigarettes -- 10, 43,400 pieces -- is estimated at Rs 1.40 crore, the lawyer added.
The consignment -- manufactured in countries in USA, UK and France -- were smuggled into India via Myanmar. Those were then brought in Assam and loaded on the truck at Guwahati, said sources in the DRI. "In the recent times, this is the a such seizure of foreign cigarettes," said the source.
Sankar Yadav, truck's driver who hails from Siwan district in Bihar, has been arrested.
"On Monday, he was produced at the court and has been sent to judicial custody for 14 days," said Saha.
