Chowrasta clutter-free plan

Darjeeling's most famous address is currently being renovated at an approximate cost of Rs 6 crore but even before the work has been completed, hawkers have come in droves. Recently, a vegetable vendor had also set shop in the square.
"I would like to appeal to all to help restore the beauty of Chowrasta. Let us not make Chowrasta a Chowk Bazar," said Anit Thapa, chairman, board of administrator, Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA).
Chowk Bazar is the main business hub in Darjeeling and has its own charm and importance in town.
The GTA has decided to convene a meeting with officials of the Darjeeling munici- pality and other stakeholders to protect and preserve the promenade.
Residents have complained that over the years, the popular Mall Road has lost much of its sheen. This is largely because hawkers who were evicted from Nehru Road some years ago have been settled along the Mall Road, covering one-third of the road route.
"It seems that the authorities are at a loss on how to clear the Mall Road. The number of hawkers setting shop on this road is only increasing," complained a resident.
Under the renovation project, the horse stable, the flooring of Chowrasta and the water fountain have been renovated and give a new look.
The total floor space of Chowrasta has also increased.
"Even though the GTA has decided to call a meeting (the date is yet to be finalised), fingers are still crossed, as it will not be easy to relocate the hawkers from the Mall Road," said a businessman..
