Bodies found in Mirik lake, cops smell suicide

VIVEK CHHETRI , TT, 05 Jul 2019, Darjeeling: The bodies of a mother-daughter duo were fished out from the Mirik lake on Thursday.
Sources said morning walkers spotted the body of Sushila Gurung, 64, floating on the Sumendu lake -- Mirik lake is also known as Sumendu lake -- around 5.30am and informed police.

Later, the body of Sushama, 32, was discovered while the pulling out the body of her mother from the waterbody, the police said.

"One of the hands of both the women were tied together with a dupatta," said a police officer.

The police said preliminary probe suggest that the women committed suicide but the bodies have been sent for autopsy.

Sources said that the duo hailed from Seed Farm Dungra busty in Kalimpong. Their neighbours said the women had been staying in Gangtok for the past five to six years.

"They had come to Kalimpong to cast their votes. They were seen in the locality yesterday while returning home after buying a gas cylinder and other items," said a villager.

Sushila's husband Madhukar, who was an ex-serviceman, had died around 15 years ago.
