17 held for lynch in tea garden
A suspected victim |
TT, 30 Jul 2019, Alipurduar: Police have arrested 17 people from Tasati tea estate where a vagabond was lynched on Sunday on suspicion of being a child lifter.
Charges of murder have been brought against all the 17.
On Monday, all were produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate's court here. The court ordered five days' police custody to three of them while the rest were sent to judicial remand.
In the past 15 days, this is the second incident of lynching in north Bengal. In five other incidents, the police have intervened and rescued injured victims.
The situation has left senior police officers baffled and prompted them to launch an awareness campaign to discourage people from attacking any unknown people sighted in their localities.
On Sunday late evening, people living in Tasati, under Falakata police station of the district, spotted a person roaming. They intercepted him and beat him..
