NBMCH sees crisis after 24 hours...119 doctors resigned

BIRESWAR BANERJEE AND SOUMYADE SARKAR, TT, 15 Jun 2019, Siliguri/Malda: The authorities of North Bengal Medical College and Hospital have informed the health department that the senior doctors would not be able to shoulder the additional burden beyond 24 hours after the junior doctors struck work.

NBMCH, the key referral hospital in north Bengal, was further hobbled on Friday by the resignation of 119 of the facility's 300-odd senior doctors. Those who have resigned have, however, said that they would continue to provide emergency services to patients.

The 250-odd junior doctors at NBMCH, where around 2,000 patients come every day and around 1,200 are admitted currently, have struck work since Tuesday to protest the assault on colleagues at Calcutta NRS Medical College and Hospital.

Some department heads are among the 119 doctors who resigned. Many doctors and employees at Malda Medical College and Hospital (MMCH) have also tendered their resignation.

Prabir Deb, the principal of NBMCH, and Kaushik Samaj- dar, the vice-principal and superintendent, wrote to the director of health education on Thursday evening that the senior doctors would not be able to shoulder the additional workload beyond 24 hours as the junior doctors had gone on strike. That time limit ended on Friday evening.

On Friday morning, 119 senior doctors put in their papers, dealing another blow to NBMCH.

"I have received resignation letters from senior doctors. In total, 119 doctors have tendered their resignation," Deb said.

"They have submitted their resignation as a mark of protest against the attack on junior doctors in Calcutta. They will, however, extend emergency services at the medical college," he added.

In the letter to director of health education, Deb and Samajdar wrote that a general body meeting was held on Thursday and it was decided that "all the OPDs will remain closed and only the emergency service for moribund patients will be provided by the faculty members and medical officers for the next 24 hours only".

In the letter, they also mentioned that "after the honourable chief minister's state- ment, the interns, house staffs and the PGTs have gone for complete cease work".

The letter says that "the senior doctors also expressed their inability to run the hospital beyond 24 hours without adequate manpower and security". A source said the senior doctors who resigned on Friday had assured that they would provide emergency services, but it was not clear if they would attend to indoor patients.

"We appeal to the chief minister to meet the agitating junior doctors of NRS and take necessary steps to solve their problem so that the impasse can be resolved," said Sandip Sengupta, the dean of student affairs, NBMCH.

The junior doctors continued their strike and demonstrated near the entrance of the emergency ward. They organised a symbolic protest by covering their heads with bandages.

At MMCH, the scene was similar as a section of doctors submitted their resignation and said the situation was not "ideal" to render services to patients.

Amit Daw, the superintendent, said he had received resignation letters but did not specify a number.
