Leave Gorkha Recruitment Depot in Darjeeling : Bimal camp
SNS, 25 JUNE 2019, DARJEELING: The Gorkha Jan Mukti Morcha's Bimal Gurung camp has written to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, requesting him to reconsider shifting out the Gorkha Recruitment Depot and the Gorkha Record Office from Darjeeling.
The Morcha has maintained that the move may invite public outrage and protests, which, according to it, should be avoided.
In a press release sent in their social media group, fugitive Morcha leader Roshan Giri said, "I have come to know from reliable sources that the Ministry of Defence/Army Headquarters has decided to shut down the Gorkha Recruiting Depot and Gorkha Record Office based at Jalapahar in Darjeeling. This news has left the entire Gorkha community and people in the region feeling let down by your ministry."
"The GRD in Jalapahar is one of the oldest military installations in our country and ever since a standing Gorkha regiment was formed in the Indian Army, the GRD, Jalapahar, has been one of its mainstays in providing new recruits who have served the regiment and our nation gloriously Moreover, the GRD provides service to a large number of current serving soldiers and also ex-service¬men who live in the region. It also opens up opportunities for employment to retired soldiers. Shutting down of this office will not only cause unnecessary hassles to our soldiers, but will also deprive them of re-employment opportunities, which they deserve," he added.
The statement further said that Darjeeling has a huge number of serving and retired soldiers, because of which, all of us here have deep emotional ties with the GRD as it is also a part of the proud and glorious heritage of this place.
