INCESSANT RAIN SNAPS ROADS, LEAVE RIVERS IN SPATE Monsoon might in Dooars

TT, 26 June 2019, Jalpaiguri/Alipurduar: Incessant monsoon rains in Dooars and in neighbouring Bhutan hills since Monday night have marooned villages and roads while culverts have been washed away.

Officials from the block administration have rushed to the affected areas to provide relief to the affected residents. Arrangements are also in progress to carry out necessary repair works.

In Jalpaiguri, the Nagrakata block has been worst hit by the rainfall and flash flood caused by the streams. Also, rise in water levels in rivers has led to erosion in Matialli block of the district.

In Nagrakata, Manmohanjhora and Sukhani, two streams, which move through Manmohanpara, a locality on the outskirts of Nagrakata town, have People stand near a stream in Jalpaiguri's Nagrakata on Tuesday.
While the bridge over Sukhani has been damaged due to water pressure, the other stream is flowing over a culvert and has drowned a Sishu Siksha Kendra, and has cut off the locality from Nagrkata. The rise in water levels of Gathia, another stream flowing through the block, has washed away a 100-metrestretch of a rural road that connects NH-31 near Grassmore tea estate with Chhartondu, a village in the block.

"The stream is also eroding earth in the village and has gobbled at least three hutments. The water has also entered the village and around 25 other houses have got inundated. There is no power supply in the area and people have to take turnaround routes," said Rabiul Islam, a resident.

The downpour has also led to rise in water levels of rivers like Neora, Diana, Torsha and Jaldhaka. In Matialli block, the Neora river has been eroding land and plantations.
