TT, 30 June 2019, Siliguri: A court here on Saturday awarded death penalty to three youths for murdering a couple and their 22-year-old son at Leninpur near here in 2015.
Debaprasad Nath, the additional district and session judge, first court, sentenced to death Sahadeb Barman, Dipu Sutradhar, both residents of Matigara, and Chiranjib Modak who is from Malbazar in Jalpaiguri district. All the three are carpenters.
On the evening of September 14, 2015, the trio entered the house of Pradip Bardhan, 62, a retired government employee. They had worked at his house a couple of months back and were known to the family.
The trio strangled Bardhan and his wife Dipti, 52. They also killed the couple's son, Prasenjit, an under-graduate student.
"The crime was committed between 7pm and 10pm. It was raining and neighbours did not have an inkling that three people had been murdered. The trio then looted gold, ATM cards and the cellphone of Pradip and fled," said assistant public prosecutor Pijush Ghosh.
The following day, Reshmi, the deceased's daughter, filed a complaint at Matigara police station. "The court ordered death penalty for all three for murdering the couple and their son. The court has observed that it was a rarest of the rarest case. They have been convicted under sections 302 (punishment for murder), 395 (punishment for dacoity), 411 (dishonestly receiving stolen property) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC," said Ghosh.
