Ministers, MLAs fail to ensure LS leads
AVIJIT SINHA, TT, 25 May 2019, Siliguri: A number of state ministers and Trinamul MLAs in north Bengal have failed to secure leads in their Assembly segments for the candidates fielded by their party in the Lok Sabha polls.
Some prominent faces in the state cabinet from the region could not ensure that Trinamul bags more votes than the BJP in their own Assembly segments.
Among them include state tourism minister Gautam Deb who is from Dabgram-Fulbari under Jalpaiguri Parliament seat, NB development minister Rabindranath Ghosh (Natabari in Cooch Behar), state forest minister Binoy Krishna Burman (Mathabhanga in Cooch Behar), minister of state for NB development Bachhu Hansda (Tapan in Balurghat) and the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Authority chairman Sourav Chakraborty (Alipurduar). "It is true the BJP has increased its votes across north Bengal but all these ministers and MLAs had won with high margins three years back. If they could not manage to retain their support, it is a matter of concern," said a senior Trinamul leader in Siliguri.
In north Bengal, Trinamul had won in 24 seats at the 2016 Assembly polls. Among the MLAs, only a few could ensure a lead for the Lok Sabha candidates. The state forest minister said: "We fail to understand why people chose religion above developmentNow that the parliamentary election results are out, a section of these leaders are trying to clarify that the political context was different this time, said Trinamul insiders. "However, most of us are not ready to buy the theory. This is because we also have exceptions in some areas like North Dinajpur where the MLAs have managed to ensure more votes for our candidates," said an insider.
Among these are minister of state for panchayat & rural development Golam Rabbani (Goalpokhor, Raiganj) and Amal Acharya (Itahar under Balurghat seat).
