Man beaten to death by friends for opposing eve-teasing
Two persons have been arrested in connection with the murder. Thirty-year-old Bikram Subba, a resident of Rajfapri area of Siliguri, had gone to Mirik along with his friends. After returning home he went to the Rajfapri market. He was spotted chatting with his friends there.
According to local residents, two women were passing by when Subba's friends allegedly made some filthy remarks and started to tease them. Subba began to protest against this when a scuffle ensued.
During the scuffle some outsiders arrived. Together with his friends they dragged him to a nearby wood and allegedly beat him with iron rods and attacked him with sharp weapons. Bikram's wife Sikha Subba heard of the incident and rushed to the spot.
The assailants continued beating him in front of his wife and then they fled away. Police were informed. Bikram was taken to a private nursing home in Bhaktinagar where he died at night.
"My son was killed because he protested," said Bina Subba, mother of the deceased. She is the former Pradhan of the Dabgram Panchayat 1. Police have initiated a murder case and have started investigations.
Binod Chettri and Kumar Sherpa have been arrested. Other names have also come to the fore. The CPIM and BJP launched protests on Thursday.
However, family members of the victim, including Bina Subba, stated that Bikram was not involved in politics.
