Experts to run hill body, says Thapa
VIVEK CHHETRI, TT, 10 May 2019, Darjeeling: Anit Thapa, the newly appointed chairman of the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration, on Thursday said he would set up an advisory committee consisting of retired bureaucrats and experts to administer the hill body.
Thapa was appointed as the new chief after Binay Tamang tendered his resignation from the post to contest the Darjeeling Assembly byelections on May 19.
"I am exchanging ideas with the people. Once I take full charge, I will form an advisory committee, consisting of retired bureaucrats and experts, to help me administer the GTA. We cannot afford to make mistakes once we take up a responsibility," Thapa said, stressing the need to promote "politics of realities".
Thapa was critical of leaders raising "emotional slogans" and alleged that these were meant to fool hill residents. "Staying in Bengal, they asked people to raise slogans like Bengal is our graveyard. I don't want to call my place a graveyard. We are always been fooled because after asking the common public to raise such slogans, the leaders would on the sly work with the state government"We do not want to fool the common people. To solve many issues of the hills, I have to work with the state govern- ment. I don't want to lie about this," Thapa added.
The GTA chairperson accused Subash Ghisingh, the late GNLF leader, of hoodwinking the common people and working to ensure the victory of plains-centric parties.
"The agitation of Gorkhaland started by Bimal Gurung was only to chase Subash Ghisingh from the hills. Look at the photos of those days...he was given police protection by the state government and he was telling the common public that his agitation was for Gorkhaland," Thapa alleged.
Accusing Gurung of using the Gorkhaland slogan to revive his political base, Thapa said: "Bimal Gurung used the Gorkhaland sentiment only to revive his dwindling support base. Look at the (last Assembly election) results, his support base was dwindling in Kalimpong, TMC had won the Mirik municipality, Opposition parties were making inroads in Darjeeling and Kurseong.".
