Darjeeling Assembly Bypolls End On a Peaceful Note

WEPEN, May 19, 2019, Darjeeling: While the plains of Bengal simmered in the poll heat, Bypolls ended on a peaceful note in the Darjeeling Assembly constituency.
“The bypolls passed off peacefully in Darjeeling. There were no incidents of violence. There received some complaints. They were addressed. The voting percentage till 5pm stood at 62%” stated Koushik Sinha, SDO, Darjeeling.
“There was an FIR lodged at the Darjeeling Sadar Police Station. There has been no arrests” stated Amarnath K, Superintendent of Police, Darjeeling.
There was a scuffle in Badamtam tea estate, 12 km from Darjeeling town. There were allegations from the GJM (Binoy Tamang faction) that some outsiders had entered booth number 112, Badamtam Higher Secondary school. A scuffle ensued. Additional security forces arrived and the situation was quelled.
There are 321 polling stations in the assembly in the Darjeeling Assembly constituency. 45 polling stations have been declared as critical booth.
The number of voters are 234758 including 115665 males and 119093 females. There are 3950 service voters.
Along with State forces, 16 companies of CAPF were deployed in Darjeeling for the polls.
Assembly bypoll was held in Islampur also. Polling was by at large peaceful in Islampur. Polling percent stood at around 71 % .
The number of voters in Islampur Assembly constituency is 2 lakh 3 thousand and 891. Male voters are 1lakh 7 thousand 255 and female voters 96 thousand 634. There are 219 polling stations in Islampur. 10 companies of CAPF were deployed along with state forces.
With Congress MLA Kanailal Agarwal resigning from the Assembly and contesting the Lok Sabha elections as a TMC candidate, the seat had fallen vacant.
