Former K'pong Morcha leader attacked
According to the First information Report filed by Mr Gurung's wife, he had left home at around 4pm to visit his new construction site. Later, people living near the site witnessed same people beating him up.
"At 4:30-5:00 pm, some miscreants suddenly came to the construction site and assaulted my husband with rods and lathis, leaving him unconscious. However, the miscreants kept beating my husband. Some women who lived nearby heard the commotion and they saw my husband lying on the ground while the miscreants thrashed him," said the FlR. It is learnt that after the women shouted for help and came forward to intervene, the miscreants fled from the spot.
Mr Gurung was the former assistant general secretary of the central committee, GJMM, before the unrest in the hills in 2017. He was, however,
declared the general secretary of the GJMM (BinoyTamang faction) in October that year after the agitation ended. According to sources, Mr Gurung however chose to stay away from politics after days after he joined the Tamang faction. He was not actively affiliated to any political party after that.
Due to the serious nature of his injuries, Mr Gurung was taken to the District Hospital in Kalimpong, which referred him to Siliguri for further treatment. Family sources said his condition is critical and that he has not been able to speak or write at the moment.
