Drugs and rare animal seized

TT, 22 Apr 2019, Siliguri: The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) seized tablets used as drugs, along with a Tokay Gecko, during raids on Saturday.

Four persons, including a resident of Nepal, have also been arrested in this connection.

SSB sources said raids were conducted at Naxalbari and at Quarter More near the Nepal border.

"We had information that two persons are carrying tablets which are used as drugs. We seized 9,800 pieces of such tablets from the duo. Both were arrested and handed over to the police," said a source.

Those arrested have been identified as Gita Prasad Adhikari, a resident of Khalbusty and Pooran Supa, from Taplijung district in Nepal.

Later, Mohammad Ashique and Nabindra Jha were intercepted at Quarter More and a Tokay Gecko, an animal of lizard species, was seized from them.

The animal is a threatened species as per the IUCN Red Data List. It is smuggled to Nepal and some other countries as it is used in making some traditional medicines.
