Darjeeling Assembly bypoll on May 19
VIVEK CHHETRI, TT, 20 April 2019, Darjeeling: The Darjeeling Assembly bypoll will be held on May 19 and counting will take place on May 23 along with that of the parliamentary election votes.
The Assembly seat fell vacant after Amar Singh Rai resigned and was nominated by Trinamul to contest the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat, for which voting was held on Thursday.
"After taking into consideration various factors like, festival, electoral rolls, etc., the commission has decided to hold the byelection to fill this vacancy," the Election Commission said in a release on Friday. The notification for the bypoll will be issued on April 22. The last day for nominations will be April 29.
Binay Tamang, who heads one faction of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha that is fighting the Lok Sabha elections in alliance with Trinamul, said: "We are ready to face any elections anytime. We have no problems in facing this election (bypoll)." Few in the hills had thought that the bypoll would be held so soon.
More central forces The Election Commission has decided to send more central forces to Bengal from the third phase to ensure most booths are guarded by paramilitary forces after complaints of malpractices in some booths guarded by the state police in the first two phases, reports our Special Correspondent in Calcutta.
Initially, it was decided that 274 companies of central forces will be used in the third phase, in which five constituencies -- Balurghat, Malda North and South, Jangipur and Murshidabad -- would go to the polls on April 23. But the poll panel on Friday decided to send additional 50 companies. "Now, a total of 324 companies will be available for the third phase… It is expected that more than 90 per cent of the 8,525 booths in the third phase will be guarded by central forces," said a source.
