TT, Shillong: Calcutta police chief Rajeev Kumar left Shillong on Wednesday after being examined by the CBI for five consecutive days in connection with deposit default probes.

Kumar was examined in the Saradha and Rose Valley cases after the Supreme Court asked the top cop to co-operate with the central agency.

On Wednesday, the IPS officer arrived at the CBI office in Shillong’s Oakland area around 9.30am. According to sources, Kumar has written to the agency seeking a “break”, saying he has to prepare a reply to a CBI contempt petition against him and two other senior Bengal officers in the Supreme Court. The plea relates to an abortive attempt by some CBI officers to visit his Calcutta home on February 3.

Kumar left the CBI office in Shillong around noon on Wednesday and landed in Calcutta at 6.30pm along with additional commissioner Jawed Shamim and deputy commissioner Murli Dhar. The duo had been with Kumar in Shillong since February 8.

On Tuesday, the CBI had examined Kumar for over 10 hours. On Sunday and Monday, he was examined jointly with former Trinamul MP Kunal Ghosh. Ghosh had been arrested earlier in the Saradha case by a special investigation team of Bengal police then headed by Kumar. Ghosh returned to Calcutta on Tuesday.

While Kumar was being examined, a CBI officer investigating the Rose Valley scam also visited Shillong office.
