Four convicted in Nepalese woman rape case

Rohit Khanna | TNN | 18 February 2019 | Kolkata: ADJ court of Barasat on Monday found four accused persons guilty in the Nepalese woman rape case .The accused persons were charged under sections 366 (abduction), 376 D (gang rape), 376 (2) (n) and 34 (common intention)for abduction, gang rape and repeated gang rape. They can be sent to rigorous imprisonment for 20 years. The seventh ADJ of Barasat court Subhayu Bannerjee is likely to pronounce the verdict on Tuesday.
The woman was abducted from in front of a bar in Kolkata's sector V in 2016.
The victim was abducted by four persons and was pulled inside a car. The woman was then repeatedly raped inside the car as the vehicle moved across the New Town area throughout the night. The accused persons had planned to kill the woman after the rape but the victim managed to open the car’s lock and jumped from the vehicle. They had also snatched her jewellery and Rs 20,000 from her. While her mobile phone remained inside the car, one of the mobile phones of the accused persons fell on the ground. She was found in a semi-conscious state while her dress was bloodstained.
"The mobile phones were of immense use during the investigation and the locations of the accused persons and the victim were corroborated by tracing the location of the phone. The place of occurrence was across Salt Lake and sector V," said Bivas Chatterjee, the public prosecutor. "This is one such case in which electronic evidence has helped in the reconstruction of the place of occurrence," he added.
