Couple found dead in hotel room, leaving 4-year-old alone

Amitava Banerjee| MP | 16 Feb 2019 | Darjeeling: A couple died under mysterious circumstances in a hotel in Jalpaiguri. Their four-year-old daughter was found alive in the room.

The dead bodies of 36-year-old Pradeep Basak and his wife Supriya (26) were recovered from the room. According to the staff, the Basak family had checked into the hotel on Friday.

In the early hours of Saturday, the staff had heard the relentless cries of the four-year-old from the room.

They repeatedly called out the names of the boarders but there was no response from inside except for the sound of the kid crying. After trying to break open the door which was latched from inside, the staff then informed the police. On forcing open the door, the police found Supriya hanging from the ceiling fan while the lifeless body of her husband lay on the bed. The daughter was found sitting on the bed and crying.

The bodies were recovered and sent for post-mortem. Police sources stated that the Basak family hailed from Gokulnagar near Falakata in Alipurduar district. Prima facie, the police feel that Pradeep could have murdered his wife and hung the body following which he consumed poison (pesticide). "We are investigating the case. The post-mortem report will shed light into the matter," stated a police officer.
