Jalpaiguri garden closed... Chengmari Tea Estate work suspended

TT Jalpaiguri: The management of the Chengmari Tea Estate in Jalpaiguri announced suspension of work on Tuesday, alleging lawlessness in the garden.

The decision has come a day after a section of workers demonstrated in the garden and assaulted Kamlesh Kumar Jha, the manager of the estate, and some trade union leaders.

The tea workers had been protesting the management's decision to change the weekly off-day from Sunday to Monday.

According to garden sources, the management put up a suspension notice on Tuesday afternoon, and most of the managerial employees left the garden by evening. The garden has around 6,000 workers.

Sukra Munda, Trinamul MLA of Nagrakata, has demanded that the garden be reopened immediately.
