Assam duo held at NJP with ivory
TT, Siliguri: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence arrested two Assam residents allegedly with ivory pieces from a Howrah-bound train at New Jalpaiguri station on Thursday evening.
The seizure by the Siliguri branch of the DRI is the second of the sort by the agency this year. The arrested are Nazrul Islam and Dipali Rongpipi, both residents of Namati village in Hojai district of the neighbouring state. They were allegedly carrying the elephant tusks in a black bag to Calcutta.
"Instead of carrying the entire tusks which can be visible if kept in a luggage, they had cut them into six pieces and concealed those in a bag. We got a tip-off and our team waited at the NJP station," said a source in DRI..
