Sikkim four arrested on extortion charge
Rajeev Ravidas, TT, Gangtok : Sikkim police on Friday night arrested four workers of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) on the charge of extortion, but the pposition party alleged the arrests were made on trumped-up allegations
The police arrested the four - Kunchuk Rapden Rapden alias Baba, Tenzing Dorjee Bhutia, Pema Sandup. Bhurtia and Amen Mothay -on the basis of an FIR lodged by Thimmey Bhutia, a government contractor.
The four were on Saturday produced in the court of the East district judicial magistrate, which granted them bail. Thimmey in his complaint alleged that the four had come to his shop at Lall Bazar in Gangtok on Thursday and demanded Rs 10 lakh as commission for the road-widening work he was doing at Kazi Road.“ We arrested the four on the basis of the FIR lodged by Thimmey Bhutia. All of them were granted bail today,” said a police source.
Jacob Khaling, an SKM spokesperson, admitted that all the four arrested persons were workers of the party's youth wing, but claimed that they had been falsely accused of extortion to sully the image of the party.
