National call for Sikkim footballer
RAJEEV RAVIDAS, TT, 15 Nov 2018: Gangtok: The news of the selection of young Sikkim winger Komal Thatal for the senior Indian football team's national camp in Delhi has been greeted with glee here.
The 18-year-old Komal, who plays for ATK in the Indian Super League, was called up by national coach Stephen Constantine as a replacement for the injured Indian captain Sunil Chhetri for the upcoming international friendly against Jordan.
Menla Ethenpa, the president of the Sikkim Football Association, said Komal's selection was not just good for him, but also for all the aspiring footballers from the state. "Komal is a promising player, but he is yet to realise his full potential.
He can reach greater heights if he can take a leaf out of Virat Kohli's book and improve his personal discipline. He is a rare talent and has the potential to become an inspiration for youngsters," he said.
Komal, on his part, said he was looking forward to improving his game at the camp. "It is great to be here at the camp and it has been a good learning experience for me. I look forward to improving myself," he said.
Both the Indian coach and his ATK counterpart Steve Coppell had encouraging words for Komal. "We have been monitoring him and a few of the other younger players over the last two years," said Constantine.
Coppel added: "Komal is a player. He just turned 18 years of age...I wouldn't be surprised if he figures in most of the games this season. He is very much in my plans."
