1 dead, 25 injured in accidents
TT, Darjeeling: One person died and 25 people were injured in separate road accidents in north Bengal on Sunday morning.
Police said a 24-year-old driver Diwash Tamang, who hailed from Sikkim, died when his pick-up plunged into the Teesta at Likhuvir in Kalimpong sub-division around 9am. Police sources said Tamang was accompanied by Azad, his helper, who swam to safety after the accident.
It is suspected that Tamang, travelling to Gangtok from Siliguri, lost control of the vehicle. A team of police with the help of rafters fished out Tamang's body from the river.
In Cooch Behar, twenty five passengers, including three minors, were injured when a mini-bus turned turtle around 7.30am near the town.
Police sources said the bus heading to Mathabhanga, first hit an electric pole and then rammed into a boundary wall before turning turtle. Police suspect that the bus was travelling at a high speed and the driver lost control.
