SUBHASISH CHAUDHURI, TT, 30 Oct 2018, Ranaghat: Prasanta Kundu, a computer operator, was arrested on Monday from Nadia's Ranaghat on charges of helping enrol fake beneficiaries in the Kanyashree scheme.
Last week, Debajyoti Sarkar, another computer operator who was hired by Ranaghat College, was held in the same case after the principal lodged a complaint.
On Monday, Prasanta, 34, was produced before additional chief judicial magistrate's court in Ranaghat and remanded in four days of jail custody.
Kundu and friend Debajyoti ran a cyber cafe in Ranaghat and had been hired by the college to upload data of students on the official portal of Kanyashree.
The arrests were made on the basis of a complaint lodged by the principal after it was found that one-time payments of Rs 25,000 to Kanyashree beneficiaries were made to 10 beneficiaries who were not students of the college.
Sources in Nabanna said that an inquiry conducted by the Nadia administration following instruction from the chief minister's office unearthed that the two computer operators hired by the school were behind the alleged fake entries.
An investigating officer said: "The duo had allegedly enrolled at least ten middleaged married women as Kanyashree beneficiaries. Debajyoti is part of a racket and one of the conspirators. He is now under police custody and being interrogated.".
